Beaufort North Carolina kiteboarding paradise small town
Beaufort, North Carolina

Voted as the “Best Small Town in the US for Adventure” by USA Today in 2020, Beaufort, located on North
Carolina’s Crystal Coast region, is a must-visit location for kiteboarders & kiteboarding of any skill level. With more than 100
square miles of great beaches and kiteable waters, the area, often referred to as SOBX, offers insane butter
spots and long ocean downwinders that provide some of the best riding on the East Coast. The region has a
few main riding spots. Sanddollar Island is a premier location that’s best with southwest winds with an outgoing
tide, all the way through low tide. Sandollar earned its name from the millions of sand dollars that are just under
the surface of the water. Cape Lookout is a progression session spot that is ideal for experienced riders. Cape
Lookout Hook is best in southwest winds, offering flatwater and waves on the west side. Northeast winds work
best on the ocean side with great wave riding. This spot is very similar to Cape Hatteras and will work with
almost any wind direction and is near Shark Island, just south of the actual point of Cape Lookout. This island is
always changing but is best on a northeast wind, which we usually get in the fall. Finally, the Point at Emerald is an excellent progression session/riding area, mostly in the winter months. The point is best with southwest or south wind. There is a pool of water in the middle at high tide that offers amazing flatwater riding, and you can find an inlet and waves around the point, the waves working the best at low tide.

What really separates SOBX from other places is the boating lifestyle that the area provides. You can literally go anywhere you need to go by boat, and this is what makes the area so unique. From the islands filled with wild Spanish horses to the historical landmarks like Cape Lookout Lighthouse and Fort Macon State Park, you can go as far as you are willing to adventure. You better bring all your toys and
don’t forget the sunscreen!
